Private Kilimanjaro Airport Transfers
We offer Airport Transfers from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) to your pre-climb hotel in Arusha. On arrival and departure from the Arrivals area you will be received by a Kilimanjaro Trekking Services official holding a board “Kilimanjaro Trekking Services” with your name on it. The transfer from Kilimanjaro airport to Arusha will take roughly an hour. Upon arrival at your hotel you can arrange a time for your pre-trek briefing that evening when your guide will do a gear check and go over the route with you.
We will also return you to Kilimanjaro International Airport in time for you to catch your trip home or beyond.
If you are flying into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), arranging a reliable airport transfer is the best way to smoothly transition into your Tanzanian adventure, whether you are heading to the safari hub of Arusha or the hiking base of Moshi.
Popular Kilimanjaro Transfer Options & Routes
Most travelers landing at JRO are heading to one of two main hubs, or straight to regional safari loops. Keep in mind that a standard taxi hired on the spot at the airport will often cost more than a pre-booked service, so securing your ride early is highly recommended.
JRO to Moshi: This is a 41 km trip that typically takes about 50 to 60 minutes. It is the primary base camp town for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.
JRO to Arusha: A slightly longer 50 km to 60 km trip that takes between 1.5 to 2 hours depending on Arusha’s notorious traffic. Arusha serves as the gateway to the Northern Safari Circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Manyara).
Cross-Border & Safari Lodges: Specialized transport operators can also arrange long-distance private shuttles directly from JRO across the border to Nairobi (JKIA) or straight to distant safari camp drop-off points in Karatu.
Important Insider Tips for Your Arrival
Look for WhatsApp Booking: WhatsApp: +255 710 661 566 Almost every top-tier transfer service in Tanzania uses WhatsApp for primary communication. Make sure to get your driver or dispatcher’s mobile number so you can drop them a message if your flight gets delayed or passport control takes longer than expected.
Check Your Vehicle Fit: Standard Tanzanian sedan taxis comfortably hold 2 to 3 passengers with regular luggage. If you are traveling as a group with massive mountaineering duffels or safari gear, explicitly request a Toyota Alphard, a 12-seater customized minivan (like a Toyota Quantum), or a 4×4 Safari Land Cruiser to ensure everything fits seamlessly.
Currency & Tipping: While most pre-arranged transport can be paid online or via card, it’s wise to carry small denominations of US Dollars (printed after 2006) or Tanzanian Shillings (TZS) for tipping your driver. A tip of $20 to $30 is customary and highly appreciated for exceptional service.
